Making at Make Eindhoven

Research and knowledge exchange

At Make Eindhoven, there’s plenty of room for knowledge exchange and cross-pollination between makers, and between makers and our advisers. Experience and prior knowledge aren’t required – creativity and resourcefulness matter more. We provide the expertise and facilities; as a maker, you carry out every step yourself. That way, you can step in and adjust at any point, learn the basics of a technique, and bring more experience into your next project.

How it works: registration periods

Whether your project is big or small, you can realise it with us. We work with 4 registration periods a year. This prevents projects from stalling because the workshop is full, and lets us help everyone as well as possible – meaning more time, space and knowledge dedicated to makers and their projects, and more time for you to organise your own project.

After registering during one of these periods, a selection round follows. You can read more about the criteria at the bottom of this page. If you’re selected, we’ll invite you to an intake meeting. We’ll go through your questions, work out what your project needs, and look at a cost estimate. This intake meeting costs €50. If you go on to make your project at Make, this amount is deducted from your total costs.

What to include in your project description

Fill in the registration form (available only during registration periods) and attach your project description, planning, CV and portfolio. In your project description (maximum 1 A4 page), describe your idea or project, the techniques you want to use, and your personal motivation. The following questions can help:

• – What’s the research component of your project?
• – Why do you want to make this project at Make Eindhoven?
• – Why do you, as a maker, need to realise this project?
• – How relevant is your project to your field of work?
• – To what extent is this project innovative?
• – Do you have experience at Make Eindhoven?
• – Do you have experience with the technique you want to use?
• – What’s your planning?
• – Do you have a deadline?

In addition:

• – Share your CV (maximum 2 A4 pages) with a short bio, relevant experience, exhibitions, commissions, projects, prizes, residencies or publications.
• – Share your portfolio (maximum 10 pages/images with a brief explanation).
• – Submit all documents digitally as PDF (no larger than 5MB)

Criteria and selection

You’re required to fill in the registration form in full. We also assess your application against several criteria, looking at:

• – How urgent this project is for you
• – How urgent it is for Make Eindhoven: what does it bring us as a makerspace and knowledge centre?
• – Why you want to make your project specifically at Make Eindhoven, rather than somewhere else
• – The innovative nature of the project
• – The sustainable nature of the project
• – Work experience in your field and at Make Eindhoven
• – Relevance to a particular field

You don’t need to meet every point. We do look for a good balance across these criteria – and sometimes strongly meeting a single condition is enough for selection. Technical feasibility also plays a role, but here too, we look for what’s possible: experiment and research are, after all, our core values. Researching and learning together is what makes Make Eindhoven both an artistic workshop and a knowledge centre.

Deadlines

Materials behave unpredictably, and can be difficult to control. For that reason, we advise against working to deadlines. A hard end date also increases pressure, and can get in the way of experimentation and playfulness – worth keeping in mind. Do you have an exhibition or another reason for a fixed end date? Talk to us about it, and we’ll see what’s possible.

Costs

If you want to make something at the workshop, you pay a fee for the workshop and any guidance you receive. See the price list for our rates. Materials you use are charged separately.

Working period

At Make Eindhoven, you can work for longer or shorter periods. You register during one of the registration periods, but we’re also happy to help with a project of just one or a few days, for example. Which period suits you best depends on your project and your working process.
