In casting we start with a wax model. On this wax model we shape the glass mold. The glass mold is made from a mixture of plaster and quartz. When the mold is cured, the wax model is melted out of the mold with steam. After drying the mold is ready to use.

In an open or closed mold, we melt chunks of glass or grinded glass. With an open mold the glass is stacked directly into the mold and during the heating in the oven glass flows out. With a closed mold the glass is stacked in a container (a plaster funnel or flowerpot), which is placed above an opening in the mold. During the heating glass flows into the mold through a hole in the bottom of the container.

Casting glass

Where the glass touches the material of the mold, it will be somewhat matted (plaster mold) of have a clear structure (casting-board): the glass takes over the surface structure of the mold material.

Glass types
We prefer to use Bullseye glass; this is the only brand that has different colors that are compatible. For casting we sometimes use Banas glass as well. This glass is not compatible and the glass you use should therefore come from the same batch. It is possible to use your own glass, but we cannot guarantee the result.

Timeline
Prior to your project, discuss the timeline with one of our advisors. We do not have glass in stock. We place orders for glass per project. Take into account a delivery time that can increase depending on how common the glass is (less common = longer delivery time).

Time indications

Making and steaming wax model several days, depending on size
Drying glass mold 1 to several weeks
Oven time object depending on thickness
Max 5 cm thick: 3 days
Max 10 cm thick: 8 days
Max 20 cm thick: 30 days

Preparation
We would love to meet you, to see what we can do for you and your project. If we can help you, we will discuss your process further. With casting we start from a wax model. You can deliver your own wax model, preferably hollow. Do you have a model in a different material? No problem. You can cast a wax model with a mold of plaster of silicone rubber.
